The name Festus Iyayi symbolizes struggle for academic freedom, democratization of our educational system, national development and socialism.

He was the President of Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) in the 1980s and in 1987, under his leadership, the Babangida administration banned ASUU, terminated the employment of Prof. Iyayi from University of Benin and subsequently arrested, detained and tortured him. It is to the credit of Prof. Iyayi and ASUU leadership that ASUU survived those repressive measures and is operating based on its founding principles. Most organizations, even when they survive, hardly are able to make any claims to values.
No doubt, the 1980s was a defining period for popular organizations in Nigeria. It was a period that the Federal Government, under the military, virtually declared a war against freedom to organize and, to that extent, declared leaders of organizations as subversives.

Teenager kills 56 year father in Osun

A teenager simply identified as Olalekan has been arrested in Ilesa in Osun State for allegedly killing his 56 year old father, Ayodele Adetoyinbo. The 18 year old suspect, who lived with his deceased father, allegedly confessed committing the crime to the police detectives attached to ‘B’ Division in Ijamo, Ilesa.

 According to a police source, the suspect committed the offence on the 13th November, 2013. The source, who preferred not to be mentioned because he was not authorized to speak on the issue, said that the suspect at 7pm on the fateful day after returning from school was allegedly accused by his father for stealing his six empty 25 litre jerry cans.

 In a fit of anger during an argument that ensued between father and son, the suspect was said to have hit the deceased’s head with a concrete cement block, which consequently led to his death. The deceased’s corpse has since been deposited at the Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa for autopsy.

The state police spokesperson, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, said the suspect would be charged to court for prosecution after the conclusion of police investigation.

Petition: Rights commission releases report on Gov Chime’s wife

         
The National Human Rights Commission on Friday released a preliminary report on its investigations into complaints of rights abuse raised by Clara, the wife of Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime.

The commission reported that the bone of contention between Chime and his wife is a disagreement over the procedure for the treatment of her occasional hallucinations and depression.

In a petition written on her behalf by human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, Clara had accused the governor of illegal detention.

Following the petition, the NHRC had written Chime, demanding access to his wife.

The Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Prof. Bem Angwe, informed journalists on Friday that a five-man investigative panel from the commission met with the major characters in the unfolding drama at the Enugu State Government House on Thursday.
